What Disability Insurance is Really All About

One of the reasons we all work so hard to encourage everyone who has a job to get adequate disability insurance is because we all share a desire to work for the common good. We understand that behind every insurance policy sold, there’s something broader and deeper than monthly premiums: security for your clients and their loved ones.

No one can know what the future holds regardless of how carefully we plan our trajectory. But we can all take steps to prepare for stumbles and setbacks that may come our way. As an industry expert, you know the inevitability of these roadblocks better than anyone and your role is to educate your clients—in a gentle but persistent way—that it’s to their benefit to prepare for a variety of possible futures.

Preparing for difficulties in life becomes even more important as we build a nest egg and take on the responsibility of raising a family. As our incomes increase, we typically set aside some of our wages, but with the bulk of our earnings, we build a more comfortable life. This is the reward for dedication to our careers and lots of hard work. But as we become accustomed to our lifestyle, too many of us begin to take our earnings for granted, assuming that our incomes will only, and always, remain steady or increase.

Not adequately preparing for a loss of income can be a very unfortunate—and entirely avoidable—stumbling block that we want to help prevent any of your clients from encountering.

It is far more enjoyable to imagine a lucky life full of fortune, but there are many directions our lives can take. In order to continue to enjoy our current lifestyle—no matter what our future holds—it’s essential that we each prepare for the worst.

This month, Disability Insurance Awareness Month, pull out all the stops and do whatever it takes to bring your clients around to understand the importance of financial security. You’ll be doing them a great service.
