An Act of Love

This may be the month of romance but love is a lot more than red roses and dinner by candlelight. Love is often about protecting the people in our lives who are dependent on us and demonstrating our commitment to their health and wellbeing. Which may sound less exciting than a diamond pendant, but being proactive about protecting a paycheck is absolutely an act of love.

Encourage your clients to think long-term when it comes to income protection (as they probably already do when it comes to matters of the heart). While they may be in the best of health now, disability can happen at any time—to anyone.

It’s a common misperception that disability is more likely to strike people working in highly physical or dangerous positions and industries. Illness, however, is a much more common cause of long-term disability, which can strike anyone in any industry. What are your clients’ chances of needing to rely on disability insurance before retirement?

·       If your client is at least 20 years old, then they have a 25% chance of disability before the age of 65.

·       A woman in good health, 35 years or older, will have a 24% chance of missing work for three months or longer before she retires.

·       A 35 year old man, who is overweight and smokes has a 48% chance of needing to take three months or longer away from work to recover from health or injury.

Even if employers offer coverage to your clients, they may not have enough to cover their entire paycheck for extended periods of absence from work. Discuss the type of coverage they have currently to find out if an additional policy would be wise.
