A Disability is Not a Solitary Affair

When your clients are considering whether or not they should purchase disability insurance, you might ask them who would care for them if they were to be struck with a disability during their working years.

It’s sometimes hard to remember that if we are forced to live with a disability, even for a temporary period, that in all likelihood someone close to us will be greatly affected. Whether our spouse, parent, sibling or children will be asked to step up and help, the question is the same: would we want to also ask that person to bear the financial burdens disabilities can cause?

Undoubtedly, nearly all of your clients will answer “no.”

Purchasing disability insurance can seem like an individual decision, but the truth is, it’s a consideration that can affect a person’s whole family. With adequate income protection, the impact of any tragedy that results in disability will be lessened.

More than 54 million Americans are currently living with a disability, a large percentage of which are cared for by a family member. According to a 2012 Easter Seals study, 60% of family caregivers wish there had been greater financial preparation prior to the period of disability.

Deciding to purchase disability insurance doesn’t just protect a paycheck, it also protects family members from unnecessary financial burdens.

Always feel free to contact us for information and advice about communicating the importance of adequate disability insurance with your clients. We’re always happy to answer questions and offer resources to help you discuss the very real importance of safeguarding your clients’ paychecks.
